Welcome to the home page of poet and artist Alicia Vandevorst.
These pages contain biographical information and samples of her creative work.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Alicia moved to California at the age of twelve. While attending Scripps College as a Dean's fellow, she was a junior fellow of the Scripps Humanities Institute, an editor of the literary magazine, Amaranth, and a writing tutor. During her junior year, she traveled to India, Nepal, and Tibet to do anthropological field research on the Tibetan culture. As a senior, she was nominated to participate in a six week poetry class with Maxine Kumin. She graduated with a dual major in Literature and Studio Art.
After graduating from Scripps, her interest in eastern philosophy developed further. She became a staff member of a meditation ashram, working in the Prison Project, an organization that offers meditation workshops and a long term correspondence course, free of charge, to the incarcerated. She also lived for a year and a half in Ganeshpuri, India as part of her continued study and service.
Alicia has written poetry for seventeen years. The last few have been devoted to a libretto, titled Birnam Wood, which is now complete. Please visit the words page for a sampling of the text. Presently, she is finishing a poetry manuscript.
In addition to poetry, Alicia does photography. The creation of image worlds is her focus. Please visit the images page to see her first complete series of images, titled Sex Visions. No need to balk; the piece is rated 'G'. The next, The First Year Perspective, was posted on July 30, 2006. She is currently working on another First Year Perspective, for her second daughter, and a series of photographs, involving actors, of a beloved, though now decrepit, theater. Her photographs are also available either as Iris prints or on silk.
