“The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes --ah, that is where the art resides.” - Arthur Schnabel

“I'll play it first and tell you what it is later.” - Miles Davis

“All the good music has already been written by people with wigs and stuff.” - Frank Zappa

Welcome to the home page of tenor and composer Toon Vandevorst. My career in music, first in my country of birth, the Netherlands, and since 2005 in the United States, has been an extensive one. I have performed professionally both as a pianist and a singer for over 15 years. I've taught piano and voice to people of all ages for more than 10. In addition to that I'm an accomplished and versatile composer of vocal, instrumental and electro-acoustic chamber music. I am also a singer-songwriter.

If you are interested in voice, piano or composition lessons with me, you can read more here.

Last but not least, here's what the press has to say about my music:

“[For Phoenix Songs] Vandevorst, Dutch trained but now a U.S. resident, set three terse poems by his wife, Alicia. Vocally idiomatic, they featured a keen feeling for vocal sonority, which meant greater clarity for the words than in other works on the program. Commissioned by Volti, they were money well spent, and music worth additional exposure.”
- San Francisco Classical Voice, March 5th 2007

“The Mass opus 18 was nothing short of a revelation: a well thought out, carefully composed and at times very moving work of music. (...) Vandevorst already displays a remarkably mature sound.”
- Brabants Dagblad, October 27th 2003

“[The Mass] turned out to be an extremely intriguing composition (...)”
- Eindhovens Dagblad, October 6th 2003

“The easily discernible translation into Dutch of the German original, the bizarre slapstick-like situations and the condensed structure make 'The Curve' a contagious piece of music theatre in the best tradition.”
- Trouw, Februari 9th 2004
